In the American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition, one of
the meanings for the word "grace" is described this way: "divine love and protection
bestowed freely upon mankind;" and, "a virtue or gift granted by God." If we were to take serious inventory of all the wonderful things that
God has bestowed on mankind, perhaps the most important gift is our ability to use words.
With words we can communicate our feelings, our joys, our sorrows and our hopes.
We can disseminate thoughts in such a way as to bring happiness and hope into our neighbors' lives. With words we can teach others things that will improve their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Most importantly, we can teach others the word of God. Unfortunately, all too often, words are callously used to tear down
our fellowman instead of building them up. We listen to the words in today's
music; music that encourages uncommitted sexual relations, lyrics that encourage lust for material things; even music with
words that discourage respect for women. Such discouraging use of words is not
limited to music, however, the news is filled with words of sadness and desolation;
the public's insatiable lust for the macabre encourages the endless dissemination of events that are depressing, gory, even
